So there I was, shooting my Canon and living a happy life as a hobbyist. I enjoyed taking pictures of nature and architecture. They didn't care how they looked in a photo. They never squinched up their nose in disapproval or asked me to "thinify" them! But they also didn't pay either....
Then someone asked if I wanted to take portraits at a local event. I was nervous at first as I had no experience doing that! But I knew I could do it, so I hired a model for a practice session. She was awesome! Her name is Nachosha and if you need a model in the central Arkansas area, look for her! She is so patient and really calmed my nerves for my upcoming gig.
The night of the event came and I got there super early to get set up and do a couple of practice shots. Leo was my assistant! He knew how important this event was to me, so he did everything he could to ensure it all went well. And, boy, did it ever! There was a line even before it was supposed to start, so we went ahead and started taking pictures. It didn't take long to get into the groove and the next 90 min flew right by us.
It's important to note that at this ceremony, I also met Paula. She was a regular attendee at these events and was nice enough to show me the ropes of this particular one. At one point, I was taking pictures of members entering the dining area and my flash stopped working!! Paula was sitting nearby and she quickly came to my rescue while I readjusted my equipment. Whew! That could have been a nightmare. From that moment on, she has become such a dear friend!
So I launched my photography career based on that event and was excited to enter the world of portraiture. Then Covid-19 hit. Yeah, right when I had my first "real" photo shoot scheduled, everything shut down and we cancelled the appointment.
To make the best of the situation, I dove into all kinds of webinars and online workshops to learn all I could about lighting and posing. I'd practice on myself! I told you I liked having my picture taken, so I grabbed the remote and clicked away! I quickly learned taking the photo and also being the model was not an easy feat. But it kept me busy and current on my lighting techniques. Always look on the bright side of life, right? Literally! haha
